Common Dental Concerns in Children
Your new denture is made to fit your unique smile. From replacing all of your teeth at once to fitting between the ones you’re still holding onto, a custom full or partial can be crafted with teeth (and gummy areas) that accentuate what you love the most about your smile. Dentures at Varsity even allows you to select the tooth size, shape and colour of your preference.
Tooth Decay
Tooth decay is common in children and caused by bacteria in plaque breaking down sugars into acid, which weakens enamel. Baby teeth are more vulnerable and decay can affect adult teeth as they develop. If a cavity is found, it can usually be repaired with a simple filling.
Bad Breath
Occasional bad breath is normal, but if it lingers, it may signal bacteria buildup. These bacteria produce odours by feeding on leftover food and plaque. Brushing the tongue, rinsing with child-safe mouthwash, and regular dental care usually solve the issue.
Gingivitis
Gingivitis is gum inflammation caused by plaque. Symptoms include red, swollen gums and bleeding during brushing. It’s common in children and usually resolves with better brushing and professional cleaning to remove plaque buildup.
Sensitive Teeth
Kids can develop sensitive teeth due to thin enamel, early decay, or small cracks. This can cause discomfort when eating hot or cold foods. Treatment may include sealants or fillings to protect the tooth and ease sensitivity.
Thumb Sucking
Thumb sucking is normal in toddlers, but if it continues as adult teeth come in, it may affect alignment and jaw development. We can offer gentle guidance to help your child break the habit and protect their growing smile.
Early Prevention
Good habits go a long way. Daily brushing, healthy eating, and six-monthly dental check-ups help prevent most issues. At Mermaid Smiles, we create positive, stress-free visits so your child feels at ease from the start.

Orthodontics for Growing Smiles
Early orthodontic assessments help identify and manage developing issues with alignment, bite, and spacing. For older children and teens, Invisalign® offers a comfortable and discreet alternative to traditional braces.
We’ll guide you on the best time to start treatment for long-term results.
