Sedation Dentistry

Gentle Dental Care Experience in Mermaid Beach

Going to the dentist can make some people feel anxious enough to completely avoid their necessary care. But putting treatment off only allows dental infections to become worse, requiring more extensive treatment. As a solution, we’re proud to offer in-house sedation dentistry for all of our patients at Mermaid Smiles. While there is no black-and-white definition as to who requires sedation, some of the reasons you may want to consider it during your next visit include:

There are two types of sedation dentistry that we offer.

Nitrous Oxide
(“Happy Gas”)

An inexpensive and straightforward option, happy gas works quickly and effectively as a light sedative and analgesic – helping you feel relaxed and at ease throughout your appointment. One of its greatest benefits is how quickly it wears off, allowing you to safely drive yourself to and from your visit without lingering drowsiness. Nitrous can be easily added to nearly any dental procedure, even something as simple as a routine checkup, making it a reassuring choice for you.

Twilight Sedation
(IV Sedation)

Our in-house anaesthetist will administer a deeper sedative medication designed to help you feel calm, detached from discomfort, and deeply relaxed throughout your visit. Most patients find they are unaware of the dental procedure as it takes place due to the amnesic effects of the sedative, & have little memory of their treatment afterward. You’ll remain conscious and able to respond during the appointment, you’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you home.

Is Sedation Right for You?

Before planning your treatment with sedation, we’ll want to review your past health and dental history, as well as discuss any recent medical treatments or medication that you’re taking. Then, we’ll talk about the advantages of each type of sedation to help you choose the one that’s best for your needs.
